Hurt said Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was similar enough to the original trilogy that it wouldn't offend the franchise's fans.
Speaking about the film, he told the Daily Telegraph: "I am sworn to secrecy on the plot. But, quite frankly, it is just like the other three.
"Indiana Jones is a tried and tested franchise. Lot of build-up. Let's hope the public like it. It will be a guaranteed hit for the first weekend. Whether it has legs will remain to be seen."
Director George Lucas said last month that he expected people to be disappointed by the fourth instalment in the action adventure series because expectations were unrealistically high.
The movie is premiered at the Cannes Film Festival next month.
