Lakeshore Entertainment has purchased Ernie Cline's script Thundercade, Variety reports.
The film revolves around a video game addict who discovers a younger player has broken a record he has held since his teen years. Wanting to reclaim his record, he leaves his job to try to win the Thundercade gaming championship.
Cline said: "Having spent countless hours playing Xbox with my nephew and listening to him trash-talk me, I fell in love with the idea of pitting older classic arcade-era gamers from the '80s against teenagers - the Atari 2600 generation versus the Xbox 360 generation."
The film will be produced by Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi along with Dan Farah.
Cline has also written Fanboys for The Weinstein Company.
