The Jarhead star would play Prince Dastan, the youngest son of King Sharaman, in the Disney film.
Gyllenhaal is currently suffering from an ankle injury which may mean he can't take the role if it doesn't heal in time. The role involves stunt work, action sequences and the lead actor is also required to perform parkour.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time will be directed by Mike Newell and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Hollywood bit-part actor and Persian prince David Zandi recently lobbied for the lead role in the movie.
