The Hong Kong action star told MTV the film wouldn't be part of the Rush Hour franchise and a "middleman" would be needed to get his and Tucker's schedules to line up.
He said: "Nowadays, you need a middleman to push things; in the old days, we didn’t need a push from a middleman.
"It's like two days ago when Chris Tucker called me. We sat down and decided we want to do another movie. Not a Rush Hour - something new."
The Rush Hour films have grossed more than $1 billion but Chan feels the time is right to move on and hopes to quickly hire a writer to work on his new Tucker collaboration.
"We finished Rush Hour and it was six years later that we made Rush Hour 2," Chan said, "and then six years later we made Rush Hour 3. It's too long!"
