DreamWorks has snapped up the film rights to Atlantis Rising, a science-fiction comic book created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.
The Platinum Studios series will be produced by Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
The comic focuses on seismic shifts at sea level that prompt military forces to explore the depths of the ocean. There they discover an underground civilisation that kick-starts a war on Earth.
Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter: "The comic brings a fresh, techno-thriller approach to a story that holds all the tenets of a classic us-vs-them alien invasion movie."
Rosenberg added that the project reflected "the global debate on our impact to the environment".
The in-demand Kurtzman and Orci are also working with J.J. Abrams on Star Trek and pilot Fringe, along with Michael Bay on the Transformers sequel.
