Superman Homepage quotes an insider on the production as confirming that the cast and crew were dismissed two weeks ago.
The source said: "It's a pity, there was a lot of good stuff in it - stuff that would've been fairly new to the screen. But also some not so good stuff, so who knows?
"There's a glimmer of hope that it will still be done... but that's a lot of planets to align."
It was first reported that the film had been shelved in January but Warner Bros subsequently announced a 2009 release date.
