The 21-year-old Juno actress, who hails from Canada, was recently announced as the lead in the BBC Films adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's novel. However, industry insiders feel the role should have gone to a Brit actress.
A source is quoted as saying: "No one is doubting Ellen Page's acting abilities, but why a BBC movie of Jane Eyre couldn't have a British actress in the lead is pretty hard to stomach.
"It's not as if we don't have enough talented young actresses here who could play the role."
A spokesman for the BBC told The Independent that British actors will be cast in supporting roles and that Jane Eyre wouldn't be turned into "some New Jersey teenager".
