Marleen Gorris will direct the Focus Films production from a script by Malcolm Kohll and Marsha Levin, reports Variety.
It tells the story of 19th Century military doctor James Miranda Barry (McElhone), who was later believed to have been a woman. She is thought to have disguised herself as a man in order to pursue her ambition of being a surgeon in the army.
The movie will focus on Barry's rumoured romance with Cape Town governor Lord Charles Somerset (Purefoy), to whom she served as personal physician.
Shooting will take place in the UK and South Africa from December.
