The film will take the characters Gogo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red away from Fraggle Rock as they interact with humans, who they believe to be aliens.
The children's series ran from 1983 to 1987 and aired in more than 80 countries.
The Jim Henson Co. will produce Fraggle Rock with The Weinstein Company acting as distributor.
Harvey Weinstein told Variety: "One of our main priorities when we first launched the Weinstein Company was to feature a broad range of family-friendly franchises like Fraggle Rock."
