Last year, the studio hired Zodiac's James Vanderbilt to pen Spider-Man 4, though the screenwriter has allegedly handed in a script that spans two films.
An insider said: "[Vanderbilt's] story arc has encompassed two films, making Spider-Man 5 shootable at the same time. The studio saw dollar signs and is in the process of reworking his deal to snatch up the story arc."
No deals are in place for director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst to return to the superhero franchise.
