Rex Features
Originating as a newspaper comic strip by Alex Raymond, the Flash Gordon character was an athlete who travelled to the planet Mongo to battle the villainous Ming the Merciless.
Previous screen adaptations include a 1980 film - notable for a Queen soundtrack - and last year's cancelled Sci Fi Channel series.
Neal Moritz (Stealth) will produce the new Flash Gordon, which is currently seeking writers.
Eisner's credits include Sahara and an episode of Steven Spielberg's Taken. He is currently working on a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.
