The actor played Mark Renton in the 1996 film, based on the bestselling novel by Scottish author Irvine Welsh.
However, he said he was not impressed with Welsh's 2002 follow-up Porno, which saw Renton and sidekick Simon "Sick Boy" Williamson attempting to make a career out of adult movies.
He is quoted as saying: "There has always been talk of a sequel but I was disappointed with the book that Irvine wrote afterwards - it was like he wrote a sequel to the movie.
"I would hate to damage Trainspotting. It would be awful to damage the reputation of that film."
Welsh recently announced that he is writing a prequel to the original novel.
