Hoffman: I turned down 'Rambo'

Rex Features

Dustin Hoffman has revealed that he was the unlikely first choice to play John Rambo in First Blood.

Speaking to Extra, the Rain Man actor claimed that he was approached by producers about playing the role before Sylvester Stallone.

He said: "I was the first one to be asked to do Rambo, but it was a little too much violence."

The 70-year-old also admitted to turning down Richard Dreyfuss's role in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: "I didn't realise you never turn down a master at his craft, which is Steven Spielberg."

Hoffman added that the one role he would have liked to have been offered was James Bond.
