Stanton, a Pixar veteran who directed the studio's Finding Nemo and the upcoming WALL-E, confirmed to reporters in Toronto that he is writing an adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction book.
Published in novel form in 1917, A Princess Of Mars focused on Civil War veteran John Carter who finds himself transported to Mars. The book is regarded as a 20th century pulp classic.
It is unclear whether John Carter Of Mars will be an entirely CGI film in line with Pixar's previous movies, or a mixture of animation and live-action footage.
Pixar's WALL-E will be released in the UK on July 18.
