Millennium Films (The Black Dahlia, Rambo) is to produce a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers.
The film will show how original musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis first met. D'Artagnan, the fourth member of the group, will either appear towards the end of the first film or in the sequel. The copyright for Dumas's 19th century story has expired and the novel is now in the public domain.
Millennium's Joe Gatta and Boaz Davidson will produce the film. The company is also working on other recognisable brand movies such as Conan The Barbarian and Buck Rogers.
"There aren't many branded properties like [The Three Musketeers] out there, and it is a seller's market for the high-profile ones," Gatta told Variety. "You can either build one from scratch or find the ones that are available and of interest to audiences, which we did with Conan and Buck Rogers."
Dumas's classic adventure story was last adapted for the screen in 2001's The Musketeer.
