Robert Altman given honorary Oscar

Brokeback's score appears again to mark Jake Gyllenhaal's entry to the stage to introduce a montage of fascinating but seemingly unrelated clips including Ben Hur, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Titanic, and Jaws. The wonders of film, perhaps.
"Wow, I can't wait until later when we see Oscars salute to montages," quips Jon Stewart. "Holy crap, we are out of clips, we are literally out of film clips. If you have film clips, please send them in - we have another three hours. I don't care if they're on beta."
Eric Bana and Jessica Alba are the next presenters, here to award the winner of the best sound mixing gong. The potentials: Narnia, Kong, Memoirs of a Geisha, Walk The Line and War of the Worlds.
And the Oscar goes to...Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges and Hammond Peek - or King Kong as they are collectively known.
Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep give a nice comic performance talking over each other to discuss the talents of Robert Altman, director of Gosford Park, MASH, Nashville and The Player. Shockingly, another montage.
The heavily-nominated director emerges to a fanfare of the MASH theme to receive an honorary Oscar, refusing to heed the Academy's advice on short speeches. Altman has been nominated five times in the past, each time walking away empty-handed.
