Confessions Of A Shopaholic
Director: PJ Hogan
Screenwriters: Tracey Jackson, Tim Firth
Starring: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, John Goodman
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: PG

This excruciatingly bad attempt at a breezy romcom is an ill-conceived, dreadfully executed mess. Totally bereft of laughs, drama and chemistry between the leads, the movie is so nausea-inducing that it belongs in a sub genre of its own - the vomcom. Sick bags at the ready...

Isla Fisher, trying to make the jump to leading lady as the titular shopaholic, was supplied with more engaging scripts back in her days on Home And Away. She plays Rebecca, a wannabe journalist who simply can't resist the materialistic lure of shopping and snaps up garment after garment with money she doesn't have. Before long, she's being chased by a debt collector while trying to hold down a writing job with financial magazine boss Luke (Hugh Dancy), a man seemingly cloned from Colin Firth in the Bridget Jones movies.

The fundamental flaw of Confessions Of A Shopaholic is that it expects the viewer to find Rebecca endearing, but instead she comes across as a selfish, stupid fool who deserves to suffer. She totally stiffs her flatmate for rent, tells Luke some scandalous lies to borrow money and continues to spend, spend, spend while telling the debt collection agency she is seriously ill or abroad.

Fisher tries desperately to play it all cute and ditsy, wrinkling her nose and deploying her smile and puppy dog eyes at every opportunity. The intrusive soundtrack tries to hammer home that she's a fun lass, while some dire slapstick attempts, such as continually slipping over on her heels, tries to make her seem innocent and misguided. To make matters worse, the debt collector on her trail is depicted as the cartoonish bad guy with greasy side parting, trenchcoat and thick-rimmed specs. We're supposed to boo and hiss whenever he enters the fray, but instead you want Rebecca to be collared and humiliated for being such a duplicitous cow.

Similarly, the blossoming romance between Luke and Rebecca is there to provide feelgood moments and intrigue, but it falls flat as there's zero chemistry between Fisher and Dancy. Besides, why should Rebecca get the dashing young man? After all, their first meeting in a queue for hot dogs involved her extorting money out of him to pay for a present for a dying relative when in reality it was to buy herself a green scarf. That might not prove fatal had there been some convincing transition in her character throughout the movie, yet she is still a nasty piece of work by the end - as proven by the method in which she finally pays back the debt collector.

Speaking of payments, let's hope the talented likes of John Lithgow, John Goodman and Kristin Scott-Thomas were handsomely rewarded for their parts in this cinematic atrocity. All three play simplistic stock characters that aren't worth mentioning, such is the substandard quality of the writing.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic appears to have been assembled from a shopping list of every possible element required to make a bad movie. Retail therapy? There's every chance you'll be craving a real therapist after sitting through this travesty.

Awful movie, couldn't agree more with the reviewer. I actually like Isla Fisher, but her character was the worst vapid bimbo I've seen since Nicole Kidman in Bewitched, and she earned none of the happy ending that got shoehorned into the end. A great cast, but all totally wasted on this piece of garbage.

I honestly think that the movie was ......ummm.....fantabuluosly fun(that's the word!) Mr Ben just because you lack understanding of genuine comedy doesn't mean you can criticize so harshly The film was more than just a romantic comedy It made me forget everything around me I was watching the movie at midnight and believe me my entire house couldn't sleep because of the movie.......because I was laughing out so loud, ofcourse!! And the chemistry between the leading pair was awesome and Fisher WAS cute Ther's so much more i can write but anyway Toodles With love Sophie

I really enjoyed the book (I've only read the first one, but I plan to read the rest), and I have to say; the movie was plain awful! And not just because it didn't follow the book plot, but it was just generally cringeworthy to watch. The supposedly "funny" bits really didn't make me laugh (I think I laughed a couple of times from the sheer idiocy of some parts), and I really didn't enjoy it!

A really heart-warming story, with a good lesson to learn from it! Isla is fantastic and Hugh is just so good looking and dreamy- they are perfect! Its your regular Romcom happy feelings film - I don't understand all the negativatey surrounding it as though it was meant to be a thought provoking intellectual masterpiece! Its a chick flick and very good at being exactly that.

I wasn't looking forward to this film particularly, but thought it was absolutely delightful. Haven't read the book, so can't comment there, but as a frothy romcom, it did the job beautifully. Thought it was very funny - and even empathised with Rebecca. Trailers didn't match up to what a great film this turned out to be.

Saw this the other day and loved it! Yes, it's not as good as the books but for a girly chick flick it's great!

Based on the trailer, I really don't want to see it. I absolutely adore the books, but it looks like they've totally f****d up the characters. Isla portrays Rebecca like some ditz! And Suze is all wrong. I hope no-one judges the amazing books from this movie :(

I wondered why this fim is being so heavily promoted.Perhaps because it's rubbish?Isla Fisher is not leading lady material.

This film is brilliant anyone who is a fan of the book or has watched it knows that it is really funny. Clearly Ben this is not your sort of film but you need to lighten up, you can't lie it's enjoyable. I give it 5/5. :-)

It's brilliant that the only ones who marked it low (other than the reviewer) are people that haven't seen it. Geez, Sophie/Wends, grow a spine and make your own choices. Personally, I have seen it, and yes, it's not the best film ever made, but what do you expect!? Even so, it's a pleasant way to spend a cold February afternoon.

I loved the film, it was the first film in ages that have actually been excited to see. if your a big fan of the books then dont go expecting it to be a copy from the book, its not there are alot of changes from the books but i still really enjoyed it. The review was really harsh i thought, if you dont enjoy that type of film dont go see it maybe when writing reviews it would be a good idea to ask the people around you in the cinema if they enjoyed it! I think the result would be a more fair review.

I wouldn't trust this reviewer! He gave Frost/Nixon five stars, and I don't think anyone who loves that so much is rally going to get much out of Confessions of a Shopoholic. Not to say this looked amazing, but I thought Frost Nixon was painfully mediocre.

Someone's grumpy! I watched the film thinking it was gonna be awful and commercially embaressing, the trailer for me was hideous. 3 Rihanna songs and scenes cut to make it look like a mix of Sex & The City, Devil Wears Prada, and any female rom com. It looked really typical and mashed together for the sake of it, but the film was brilliant. It was such a simple piece of film, but I thought it was cleverly done, even knocking back some clichés. I don't think you looked deeper than the surface, and got annoyed by the girly simplicity of it. When really it was made really well, and for me, didn't ever seem to drag on. I was surprised, and I was a cynic. Simple happy films aren't always terrible, they're good for when you don't want to use your cleverly sharp witted mind. :P

to be honest, my friend just brought me the first book in the series from the states knowing me to be a book/movie addict .. the book is wonderful, but I can't agree more with Wends; I was bothered by the fact that they based the movie in America, and the trailers are just wrong ... again, excellent and funny book to read ..
