This Is It

Starring: Michael Jackson, Kenny Ortega
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: PG
18 days. That was all that stood between Michael Jackson and a glorious pop comeback at O2 in Greenwich in the summer. The King of Pop was supposed to Moonwalk, grab his crotch, reunite with his brothers and bring closure to the most scintillating and extraordinary pop career since Elvis. Tragically, as we already know, ill health robbed the singer of his final chance to remind the world that there was more to him than pet chimps, controversial court cases and a defunct theme park. Kenny Ortega, the choreographer/director of the proposed 'This Is It' jaunt, was filming rehearsals and interviews during the build up to the shows to give Jackson footage for his personal archives. Determined to not let Jacko's final work go to waste, Ortega has cobbled together that footage to create a lasting testament to Michael Jackson The Popstar.
After a series of sycophantic messages from Jackson's backing dancers, where they all unsurprisingly reveal that working with the 'Thriller' star is all they have ever dreamed of, This Is It begins properly with the singer taking to the stage for 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin''. It would have been the opening number on the tour and it provides a suitably thrilling introduction to the world Jackson occupied in his final days. Over the next 112 minutes, Ortega brings us versions of Jackson's best ('Thriller', 'Billie Jean') and worst material ('Earth Song') in various stages of completion.
For those interested in the more morbid side of the story and the circus and conspiracies around his death, Jackson's vocal and physical abilities appear to be in relatively good health. Aged 50 and worryingly thin, not surprisingly, he falls short of his groundbreaking 'Dangerous' and 'Bad' world tours. However, there are moments, such as a stripped-back one-take run through of 'Billie Jean', a furious 'jacket on fire' crescendo to 'Beat It' and a black and white movie-intro for 'Smooth Criminal', which prove that Jackson still had more star quality and charisma than a million Simon Cowell factory-line production pop singers.
Equally impressive, is the ambition of Jackson and Ortega's stage show. A tinge of sadness runs through the film because of the fact that this show - potentially one of the grandest and most visually stunning concerts of all time - never got to see the light of day. The updated 3D intro and flying ghosts on 'Thriller', the greenscreen marching army backdrop for 'They Don't Care About Us', the stunning live band and array of the world's most talented dancers working in sync with Jackson would surely have raised the bar further than even the King of Pop had been before.
However, it is the interludes and vignettes between the performances, which really make this film essential viewing. We see Jackson as a perfectionist, a generous boss, a tough taskmaster and a playful child. Off guard and probably unaware that it would ever be seen by the public, we find Jackson pushing his band and production team to the limit with demands to "let it sizzle" and "make the music simmer". Obsessive Jacko fans may be shocked by his Diva-ish behaviour as he complains about ear-pieces, but it's heartening to finally view the late singer as a rounded human with regular failings and imperfections. Similarly a scene featuring Jackson screaming "weeeee!" with childish glee as he moves around the stage on a giant cherry-picker, will surely bring a smile to even the most cynical viewer.
If your grandchildren ever ask you what was so great about Michael Jackson, then give them a copy of Thriller and let them figure it out for themselves. However, if they want to know whether the rumours were true about him being a freak and a weirdo, then show them this film. Difficult, odd, kind, obsessive and funny, This Is It finally offers us a very brief glimpse of the real Michael Jackson.

Whoever wrote this review, you are a complete a**. First of all, "Earth Song" is MJ's worst? What the hell planet do you live on? That is one of the most powerful songs in existence. As for THIS IS IT showing MJ as a freak or weirdo. Alex Fletcher--do us all a favor and QUIT YOUR DAY-JOB. This Is It shows the genius that MJ was and will always be. The film gets 10 out of 5 stars. Alex Fletcher's pathetic review here doesn't even deserve 1 star.

5 stars!!!! What a brilliant experience it was watching the King Of Pop, on the big screen, doing what he does best - rehearsing his brilliant songs with breathtaking dance moves and singing his soul out with the sweetest of voices. You do feel sadness at the thought of what this concert would have been and in my humble opinion, it would have been THE best concert of the decade. MJ was ready to blow the critics, doubters & haters out of the water!!! Whether you are a fan, a cinema-goer or a music lover, go watch this movie and experience the magic & genius of Michael Jackson!

The film was wonderful. The cinema fell silent when the message began at the start of the film. It was so sad knowing all of it was for nothing. The dancing was fantastic, his voice was just as good as it's ever been. I loved the end of 'Beat It' when they jumped up and down and he fell to the floor and kicked his legs in the air. So cute when he was going "Whee!" on the cherry picker. There were so many great moments and makes it all the more sad that he's gone when he was capable of that. I can't wait to get the DVD. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I really recommend you do.

I AM IN TOTAL DISBELIEF AT THIS REVIEW! And, the fact that this person is a "Senior Reporter" makes it that much more disgusting. As a reader, I would never, ever trust another word written by this "reporter" in future reviews, knowing how off base this review was. Did we even see the same movie? I've seen it twice. "Earth Song" his worst material? Seriously, have you even seen the original video? How can you be a human being, living on Earth, and say that a piece of art dedicated to bringing awareness to the state of our planet? I guess you are one of the people he speaks of in the movie, that are counting on the government and "others" to take care of the problem. You clearly didn't do your homework; educate yourself, learn the lyrics and meaning behind a song before you qualify yourself to pass judgement. Lastly, coming from a person who works in the entertainment field, and has rehearsed with her share of bands, calling Michael a "Diva" over the ear monitor situation was almost laughable! Clearly you are commenting on something you know nothing about. He never raised his voice, hurled an insult or stormed off stage as I have witnessed MANY times by diva-esque behavior. He was positive, reassuring those involved that this is what rehearsal was for and that he knew it would be worked out, and he said it with L.O.V.E. So, I'll ask you again, did we see the same movie? I give the movie a 5, as for the reporting, you should be removed from your present position. Effective immediately.

After watching this rehersal and the plans that were in place, I have no doubt that this concert would have been brilliant! Michael's perfectionist style with his music and his performance has not differed from when he first went solo and worked with Quincy. You'll get what I mean if you watch the original makings of his video's on You tube or listen to the comentry on the special edition CD's for Off the Wall, Thriller, BAD etc. When you compare Michael in rehersal to Michael going full out on the finished product, you'll understand why so many have the utmost love and respect for the man, his art, his work ethic and his kind heart. I'm glad I saw this film and sad it never came to fruition.

this review has good points. it was a good idea that mj and ko met to create this concert, jacko always wanted to stretch the boundry of concerts, he wanted to bring the videos he made to work on stage, he wanted visuual effects and not just a normal concert. i have not seen the film yet but reviews have been very good. there wont be another mj for yrs to come, he did mmore than just sing. my kids who are 10 and 7 listen to his misic and watch the vids. he was a classic artist. to be honest who matches his citeria these days. its a shame your gone, but you left this world on a high and jacko this world we live in sucks, we are all greedy and selfish people now, we dont look after our neighbours or friends we dont go to church or bring up our kids well. before we spend time citisizing mj for his looks and behaviour look at your own habits and and actions, are you any better. think real hard before you dismiss my comments.

I thought it was amazing. What a great legacy for his children and his family. Hopefully, at the right time his family can see the joy and happiness in MJ throughout the movie. It was after he passed away that I realized I love his talent and passion for his art.

To the reviwer...have you forgotten that this was a REHEARSAL! You speak as if this was a recording of a full show where he was going 100% for it. Of course it wasnt as good as the Bad or Dangerous tour thats because it was a REHEARSAL. Got it?
