Same Sex America
Same Sex America explores the issue of gay marriage in the USA through the eyes of seven same-sex couples.

Due to a decision of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts in 2003, it became law in that state that same-sex couples are to be granted marriages recognised by the eyes of the law.

Enraged at what they deem to be a sacrilegious alteration in the definition of marriage in such a way that God had not intended, Christian groups, along with other right-wing conservative groups, vehemently campaigned against the development.

Although gay marriages have been recognised since May 17, 2004, this foothold for the civil rights of same-sex couples may well be lost as members of the legislature are indignant over the ability of a state court to impose a 'disagreeable' law upon the rest of the nation without legitimising it with legislation.

The film is laudably even-handed in promoting the views of each camp, and although director Corra clearly sees the gays' cause as the just one, he is careful to allow the audience to derive credence from the conservatives' viewpoints. People are given equal opportunity to condemn the 'legalised perversion' that they find so abhorrent (equally so as the political hot potato that is abortion) and to criticise discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation - 'this is our lives, not some abstract principle.'

As well as being excellently informative and comprehensive about its subject matter, the piece affects the heart and mind in equal measure. One couple who married on 17th May 2004 had waited 49 years for the right to do so - it is impossible not to be moved. Another emotional stand-out point is where a lesbian explains to the filmmaker that her parents have attended to campaign at the same event, but as the side opposing equal rights and how the situation 'breaks her heart'.

Although at the time of filming the moves to block same sex marriage were being dismissed by federal judges, the ability of gay couples to legally marry in Massachusetts hangs in the balance.

This film is an excellent exploration of the issue and also invites the audience to revaluate their own opinions on the issue.
