Eragon
Published Sunday, Dec 17 2006, 20:36 GMT | By Daniel Saney | 26 comments

Screenwriter: Peter Buchman
Starring: Ed Speleers, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Djimon Hounsou
Running time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
The life of young farmboy Eragon (Speleers) is changed forever when he happens upon a mysterious stone in a forest. Soon his stone reveals itself to be an egg, hatching into a dragon (voiced by Weisz) and sealing his fate to be a Dragon Rider. Under the guidance of secretive old story-teller Brom (Irons), Eragon sets out to help rebel force the Varden against the land's evil king Galbatorix (Malkovich).
Eragon is based on Christopher Paolini's identically-titled fantasy novel which, though not a masterpiece, is an enjoyable page-turner. If eked out well, there's an equally entertaining, if derivative, film to be found in the book's plot - unfortunately director Stefan Fangmeier's effort is not that film.
Most of this film's problems stem from its differences from the source material. Helping to maintain interest in the book was the fact that the readers felt that they were learning about the history of Alagaesia and its current predicament as Eragon did. In the film, most of this is handed to us on a plate by a spoilsport voice-over, which is expanded upon by our being shown most of (what the film sees as) the main characters within the first twenty minutes - none of whom give us much to look forward to.
Aside from a relatively faithful introductory 20 minutes, both the pacing and the actual storyline are reworked terribly. The writers skip over innumerable dramatic sequences which would have helped the audience to invest in the characters that have been included, in favour of action scenes deemed to be more exciting. Meanwhile, an entire dwarven society is unaccounted for and some characters are either missing (Solembum), stretched almost out of recognition (Angela) or criminally underwritten (Murtagh). In a few cases such reworkings are likely to cause problems if, God forbid, they decide to commit the other books of Paolini's trilogy to screen. The changes would be much easier to justify if the resultant narrative made sense on its own terms, but unfortunately this is frequently not the case.
Taken purely as an action-based film aimed at kids (certainly more so than the novel), Eragon is passable at best. There are numerous scenes of flying dragons and people rushing around on horseback, but there's little effort made to tell us why, and less to make us care. Saphira the dragon herself is done well enough, though is certainly not the best-conceived screen beast of her kind.
The cast boasts a few good names, including Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and Rachel Weisz as Saphira's voice - however, they do little to raise Eragon's quality. Irons's performance is certainly the least embarrassing, though he's helped along by the scriptwriters in that he has the fewest silly lines. Meanwhile Ed Speleers, who plays the eponymous hero, looks earnest enough throughout, but never makes us feel anything for his character's plight.
Anyone who has read and enjoyed Paolini's epic book would be well advised to steer clear of this film, which is half the length a true adaptation would require. Those who haven't may have a marginally better chance of enjoying Eragon, though it may leave you reaching for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings to remind yourself how it's meant to be done.

I actually loved the film but I do believe it could have been directed better. To be honest while watching the movie my mind did drift off to Lord of the Rings which by the way is the most fab movie ever.

The worst film I have EVER seen. I had to do a review on the book in school and it is NOTHING like the book. The only similarities are the names and the fact that there's a dragon in it!!! DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT WATCH THE FILM....read the book though. The book is really good.

This is the WORST movie i have had the misfortune to see. Story is bad, plot is bad. Even some of the better known actors in this movie are bad. The only thing even keeping this movie going was the music. Though just like most other fantasy films. I am sick of these second rate BOOK/MOVIES just don't do them if you are going to make a monkey out of it.!!

I thought it was quite boring and has copied parts from other films such as Superman and Lord of the Rings.

This was truly awful. An sorry attempt to emulate a lord of the rings type epic. Predictable and with the most irritating hero ever. This kid does nothing he is told to do, listens to nobody and ends up in true hollywood style causing more trouble that he is worth ! Cute baby dragon though.

The film was fine. It was entertaining enough to keep you in suspended reality for its entire duration. I liked the character development of eragon. but it is not a film you remember...as soon as you step out of the movie house its as if you were never there at all, it doesn’t make an entire conversation - more like a couple of sentences

Bad. Awful, Dire, Painful, the worst film I have ever paid money to see. I did wonder if it was because I don't usually like swords and sorcery type things but I am pleased to see I am not alone in hating this pile of old pony. My daughter has read and loved the book and was pressuring me to see the film as soon as possible, so it was with considerable anticipation we sat down to it. I was laughing AT it within very few minutes. It was too much like too many other things.. particularly the movie they made out of "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula le Guin. I quite forgot that it wasn't the same film at times. It was so funny... and not for the right reasons. The effects were OK, but the script was painful. I'm afraid I was practically howling with derisive laughter long before the end. Verdict: Save your money.. dont even bother with it as a video rental.

eragon is brilliant - almost as good as Harry Potter.

This movie was and is so bad that I am considering a Class Action lawsuit to get my $10 back. Acting was awful, script was worse than awful, special effects were awful, pacing was awful, directing (if it happened at all) was awful. Things done well: - Marketing campaign to get people into the theater - the popcorn, although the Eragon team likely had little to do with that. Overall rating: 0 out of 10

Ed Speleers is delicious to look at...but he can't act. Should be doing 70's porn instead. I also think Weisz is miscast as the voice of Saphira. Do you remember the "rip it out his chest" line...weak weak weak.... I won't even start on how badly Djimon Hounsou sounds in this film. Peter Jackson where art thou?

The book is aimed at the 'young adult' market. It's violence & physical horror level( e.g.Urgals have massacred a village, and piled the corpses as a display, with a baby on top) would probably rate a 15 age minimum. The film was so blatantly downscaled to aim at under 12's, that it's a travesty. I feel as if a new, young author has been taken advantage of. Paolini's writing deserves much more than this!

A long awaited film, but sadly disappointing. Too short, absence of storyline and characters, the making of a sequel would be confusing at best.

The film was of reasonable quality - but I do agree that the acting was not good. The book was quite enjoyable but the film did not live up to its hyped expectations.

This movie managed to take the book, which was, to be honest, awful, and make it worse. Eliminating every part of the book that made it readable in favour of 'Ooh, shiny, stuff to kill!'. And what was up with Arya and the feathers? And the *skirt*?

I haven't read the book, but enjoyed the film. I thought that Jeremy Irons played an excellent part, though the battle scene could perhaps have been better thought out. I will read the book now, and maybe then I might not feel so good about the film, but if you don't already know the book and take the film on face value then it is very entertaining.

I have not read the book and thought that the movie might turn out to be a good one, I was a bit disappointed by the story line but thought some of the acting was allright. I think it lacked in good directing and think that "if" they make another film think that they should hire a better director. The best part of the whole film is some of the computer animation which is quite good while taking the underachieved film into consideration, but if the second film did come out I would have to watch it because the first film only tells half the story and hopefully if I watch it it will leave me thinking that it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.
