Mr Bean's Holiday

Screenwriter: Robin Driscoll, Hamish McColl
Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Willem Defoe, Emma de Caunes
Running time: 88 minutes
Certificate: PG
A couple of years ago news filtered through that music was being used to torture prisoners kept at Guantanamo Bay. The repetitive, monotonous and grating quality embedded within these songs was supposed to lure the captives into a confession. Well, if the authorities have any sense they’ll be shipping out any available prints of Mr Bean’s Holiday over there as a matter of urgency. Lock any able-minded person in a room with this cinematic atrocity and they’ll admit to anything as a means of escape.
We follow Mr Bean (Atkinson) as he attempts to reunite a boy with his father after a series of mishaps on his way to a holiday in Cannes. Along the way, he encounters crustaceans, a vanity-ridden director (Defoe) and an amorous young lady. As for the viewers, we encounter nothing but deeply unpleasant tedium.
What attempts to pass for humour in this film are protracted sequences of Bean pulling faces, Bean walking in a bizarre manner, Bean dancing in a village square and so on. It appears that the filmmakers felt it sufficient simply to point the camera at Rowan Atkinson and pray that everything will fall into place. A decade has passed since the last Mr Bean film so there’s no excuses for the writers to not dream up some remotely funny scenarios for the character to encounter.
The tragic thing about this film is that Mr Bean was once a pure joy to behold. Throughout the various half hour television shows of the late 1980s/early 90s there were many hilarious moments. Who can forget Bean ordering the steak tartare and then trying to discreetly hide the raw meat, or his fear at undressing on a beach only to discover that the only man nearby was blind?
There’s nothing near approaching any of those situations here. Instead, we have protracted sequences of Bean simply gurning at the camera endlessly. This kind of performance only works within a suitably funny framework and the total lack of inspiration is plainly evident. What could have been going through the undeniably talented mind of Rowan Atkinson whilst shooting the film? As for Willem Defoe – a classy actor – one can only rationalise that he wanted to boost his bank balance a bit.
What’s there to say about the direction? Not a great deal, apart from the fact that switching the cameras on and calling “action” was a mistake.
Perhaps the most pathetic attempt at a motion picture ever and one that makes Martin Lawrence’s canon look Oscar-worthy, Mr Bean’s Holiday is an abomination.

I do not think this was an attempt by Rowan Atkinson to reinstate his career, just a pure money making tactic to bring Mr. Bean to a new younger audience, I do not think it was a good movie though non the less it's the same old Mr. Bean...I don’t think he should attempt any more movies though!

The film was bitterly disappointing, infact, it's the only film that has made me feel like I wanted my money back!!

I took my kids to see Mr Beans Holiday 2/04/07. I am a big fan of Mr Bean and was totally disappointed in the film. I watched the television series without fail everytime it was on and used to have tears of laughter running down my face at this mans anticts. However I have came to the conclusion that Rowan Atkinson should lay this character rest until the right film script comes along to bring him back.

During the film you never get bored or think 'i want to go', it is a good film all the way through and it is really funny, some young children won't find it funny the way he keeps saying oui and gracias but most adults will. The storyline isn't very good but it is a funny film. WORTH SEEING!

i thought the film wasn't as funny as it could of 'bean' children didnt find it funny in the cinema, and the film wasnt about his holiday, it was more about his journey, anyway hope he does better next time!

I thought it was absolutly great! Very funny, one part had me in tears of laughter. I had been waiting ages to watch this, and it lived up to every expectation. Rowan was brilliant. Fabulous. 5 Gold Stars from Me! Hope there will be more!

I wasn't impressed, i expected better from rowan atkinson however, my 6 year old thought it was the funniest thing he has ever seen and has taken to dancing like mr bean! so it did serve its purpose and entertained the children for a couple of hours. Maybe im just getting too old to appreciate it!

A rather unoriginal approach for a comedy film but given that, it is in my opinion worth the watch, for Mr. Bean is a delight to our screens. His expressions are actually the funniest parts of the character. It deserves at the most 3/10. I think the above review was a bit harsh, may be right, but still it has been 10 years since the last movie; let's hope they find an acclaimed comedy writer for the next edition in the Mr. Bean film series - if there is another one.

I watched it with my kids and we all laughed and laughed, very funny. No swear words, nudity, vile humor, just funny fun. Go watch "Crash" or "No Country for Old Men" if you want Oscar flavored movies that portray humans as a pointless species on this earth.
