I Am Legend
Director: Francis Lawrence
Screenwriter: Mark Protosevich, Akiva Goldsman
Starring: Will Smith, Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Salli Richardson, Willow Smith
Running time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15

Sci-fi action movies usually go one of two ways. Either they become blood-thirsty shoot-em-ups or they provide considered thought-provoking visions of a terrifying future society. It's rare that the pair go hand-in-hand. With I Am Legend, Francis Lawrence attempts to achieve the impossible and blend the two by using gruesome CGI effects and Will Smith's big screen appeal to bring to life Richard Matheson's canonised and much lauded sci-fi novel. The end result is a clunky, but still relatively entertaining hour and 40 minutes of monster killing. However, any aspirations for this to become anything more serious than a gun-totin' horror flick are dashed by Lawrence's ham-fisted direction.

The plot revolves around the celebrated scientist Robert Neville (Smith) and his quest to save mankind from extinction. Neville is the last human survivor in New York (and possibly the world) following the eruption of a virus that was originally designed as a cure for cancer, which either kills or mutates humans into primal creatures of the dark. Neville is immune to the virus and dedicates his life to finding a vaccine using his own blood. Alone in New York, with only his pet dog Sam as company, he spends his life hunting down 'The Infected', watching DVDs and generally trying to live a normal life, while defending his home from attacks.

Bogged down under several layers of subtext and numerous themes about the state of the world, faith and heroism, there is a great film trying to get out of I Am Legend. The Matheson tale is ripe for movie adaptations (this is the third big screen adaptation of the novel) and the central principle that mankind meddling with nature can have catastrophic effects, although a little tired, is still relevant and interesting enough. However, Lawrence chooses too often to focus on the cheap action shot rather than studying anything more considered. Enough hints are dropped about the evolving behaviour of The Infected and Neville's gradual descent into madness, but neither are anything more than froth on the tip of a very basic action flick.

Will Smith is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having worked successfully on Independence Day and a little less successfully on I Robot in the past. His performance, as far as the movie allows, is superb. He revels in his one-man show (for he is the only actor for large chunks of the film) and he is one of the few A-listers that could manage to add warmth and humour to Neville's character without giving cause to cringe. His double team with Sam the dog could have been dire in the hands of less accomplished comics, but he succeeds in his usual manner, playing the all-American hero as well as anybody, barring perhaps Tom Hanks. However, he isn't really allowed to really stretch himself in this film because the scenes showing Neville's psychological disintegration are regularly cut short. Lawrence repeatedly opts to chuck in a few blockbuster-style action sequences - which seem thoroughly out of place - rather than ask Smith to flex his thespian muscles.

The CGI effects are undoubtedly the biggest let-down on this movie. Looking like something out of Harry Potter or Lord Of The Rings, The Infected are too other-worldly to cause alarm or concern beyond an initial shock value. They may scare a few innocent children that stumble across the movie, but their ghoulish and alien-like nature sends the movie into basic Hollywood movie territory, which is a shame because Smith's performance and Matheson's original text offer outlets for so much more. As so much of the movie is spent adding touches of authenticity to Neville's existence, making us believe that this really could happen in 2009, it's peculiar that they saw such elaborate and explicit use of CGI as a suitable way to place The Infected on the screen.

Having said all of that, there's no denying that I Am Legend repays your ticket money. Smith conjures up enough laughs, drama and old-school action in this one-man show that the cinema cash tills will keep ticking over nicely this Christmas. Audiences will lap up the special effects and amazing shots of a desolate New York, but at the same time they certainly won't be thinking of the film's various subtexts after they've made it out of the theatre's front doors. It's a better-than-average blockbuster, which sweeps around some large ideas and interesting themes, but never delves for long enough to make this film a true classic.

Its a Zombie flick - all other references to the book and subplots are so underplayed they may as well not be there

A big disappointment, nowhere near the quality of 28 Days Later. The CGI of the city and infected was like watching an XBOX 360 game - everything had that kind of plasticky look. All the cars in the street, street signs, windows all seemed a bit too clean after a couple of years of neglect. Where did he get running water from? What about the fuel for his generators? How come the infected didn't hear or smell his generators running? Totally unrealistic. Look at 28 Days Later: the London you see is the REAL London, not CGI. The infected are REAL actors, not CGI. The end result, especially with the camera work, is that you feel fully immersed in it. I am Legend was just another Hollywood flick, no real substance. And that's the real shame of it, the missed potential for a great movie.

I am a huge fan of Will Smith yet this was nothing more than abysmal. Drawn out, poor plot line and the acting was not of the highest standard. You can do so much better Will!

Was pleasantly surprised. The film was pretty good (bar the innacuracies), just didn't like the cliche'd end. The ending of the book sounded much more interesting/thought provoking. Still a fun film though.

This was a much poorer adaption of the original novel than Charlton Heston's Omega Man. I think the problem was that the film was too short and didn't give anywhere enough background to how society had collapsed so quickly and how some people still had services. And how come that little town at the end wasn't being besieged? Should have been better!

we were bored of this film after about half an hour. The pointless jumpy bits (like Will slamming cupboard doors after a quiet moment) added nothing. The ending was rubbish and unrealistic and the infected were not developed enough as characters. Wills' superb acting was the only saving grace otherwise it was predictable, slow and couldn't seem to decide what genre it was: horror, sci-fi or comedy.

This film, scared me sooo much but it was sooo worth it. absolutely fantastic and Will Smith is a great actor as well as extremely fit in this film. Go watch it or you'll regret it but be warned if you are a wimp, like me, you may not sleep tonight!

Really enjoyed this film, it had everything from laughter & sadness to excitement and anticipation. I found this to be very thought provoking. Will Smith was perfect for the role.

I was pretty disappointed with this film. It was neither a great sci-fi nor a great horror movie. A lot of potential was wasted with this film. Smith isn't a strong enough actor to convey the complexity of the main character. If the film had been better directed it could have been far more tense and powerful. As it was it was like a cut-price version of 28 Days Later without any of the really scary or good bits.

Alex Fletcher, what are you talking about? 'Independence Day' was laughable dross and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. 'I Robot' was well received by critics, and was a decent film. Why would you write, 'Will Smith is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having worked successfully on Independence Day and a little less successfully on I Robot in the past'. Are you reviewing films based on their merit, or on their box office ratings? Have you actually watched them?

Not normally my type of film but I found myself both gripped with tension and moved by the plight of Dr Robert Neville. The "infected" were portrayed well and not plastered with gore for a change. This added a level of believability to their existence within the film. Will Smith puts in a sterling performance.

I read the novel & saw the movie, they have practically nothing in common but the title. But trust me this movie is worth watching several times. I loved the creativitiiiiiiii, there is practically no music but the natural sound ... & concerning will's performance, I'm just givin him 10 out of 10 , I've seen this movie 3 times, & I'm willin to see it again & who knows ...

Hilarious. Appalling. A pathetic Hollywood rip off of 28 days later, and yet another appalling treatment of a sci fi classic. The "special fx" cgi looked like some bedroom renderings on a bog standard PC.

Hmm, he's all deserted in NYC but he still has electricity and running water. Must have been those CGI people burning coal and running water works. Will smith wanted it to have the effect of Forrest Gump - turns out to be very depressing storyline for 100 minutes.

Was there actually a storyline..? It just seemed to consist of Will Smith's character shooting at stuff and being angsty. The CGI was pretty grim and there was very little explanation of how NY became deserted. However, Will Smith's acting was excellent. And I adored Sam the dog, good depiction of how Neville was losing touch with reality due to lack of human interaction.
