Frankel, who also helmed romantic comedy hit The Devil Wears Prada, reportedly wants to start filming on One Chance next April. The comedy will be made in Potts's native Wales with an unknown actor expected to take on the lead role.
Last year Julian Jarrold held talks about helming the feature for producer Simon Cowell and studio Paramount, but left when the project was hit by production problems.
Justin Zackham (The Bucket List) penned the One Chance script, which will track Potts - a former mobile phone salesman - as he makes one final attempt to become a professional opera singer by entering ITV's talent contest.
Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is also involved in the movie. The filmmaker previously described the script as "brilliant", adding that the film has the potential to be "a big hit".
