The actor and comedian - who plays Will McKenzie - said that the tone of the series has never been as "harsh" as other teenage shows.
Bird told The Daily Telegraph: "There's a nostalgic element to The Inbetweeners.
"Even though it's disgusting and puerile, it is quite gentle at heart with the relationship between the boys.
"In that way it doesn't feel as modern or fast-paced or harsh as something made by teenagers. It's got a more mature and softer tone to it, as well as lots of jokes."
Inbetweeners Movie director Ben Palmer has described the upcoming film as "sentimental".
The Inbetweeners Movie opens in cinemas on August 19.
