It was earlier reported that Freeman turned down the role in the adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's book because he had already committed to filming the second series of BBC One's Sherlock.
However, Entertainment Weekly says that New Line and MGM have now contacted Freeman with a new filming schedule that would allow him to star in The Hobbit and Sherlock.
The studios and the actor are currently negotiating the new deal.
Ian Holm played Bilbo in director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films.
