The 32-year-old actress, who played Joanne Rossi in the BBC Scotland soap, confirmed that she is expecting to play a nanny or a sister of one of the main characters.
Speaking to the Daily Record, McKenzie admitted: "I know every single look, word and sideward glance that was ever filmed for Sex And The City. I'm a huge fan. So I'd like to think that level of dedication will pay off.
"It's really exciting and I was delighted to get the callbacks when the casting director came to London."
The new movie is expected to be filmed in both New York and London and deal with the impact of the current economic crisis on the lives of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends.
McKenzie left River City in 2007 after five years. She was later replaced by Lisa Gardner in the role of Joanne.
