"To be honest, the only similarity I see is that they're both women in the CIA," Chastain told The Wall Street Journal. "I love the show. I love Claire Danes. I would love to act with her. Ever since I saw My So-Called Life!

"But I think the characters are apples and oranges. This is a true story, this woman, and that's a fictional show. Now we're learning that there are a lot more women in the CIA than we assumed.

"So I think a lot of people think it must be based on the same woman. But Maya's not bipolar, she doesn't take medications."

Zero Dark Thirty has received several BAFTA nominations, including 'Best Actress' for Chastain, 'Best Director' for Kathryn Bigelow and 'Best Film'.

Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal have recently hit back at critics who claimed that the film endorses torture.

Zero Dark Thirty is released in US cinemas on January 11, and in UK cinemas on January 25.
