The 39-year-old, who plays FBI agent Erica Evans on the successful '80s reboot, likened the movie to 1999 film Magnolia.
The independent drama, which co-stars Dane Cook as her husband, has the former Lost castmate portraying a woman obsessed about having a child.
Mitchell told Entertainment Weekly: "Playing a hormonal woman whose marriage is shaky and who has lost her way through her ultimate obsession - I love stuff like that. That's where I live.
"The movie is a little bit like Magnolia where you get this glimpse into people's lives and it may not be exactly what you want to see, but it is accurate."
The picture, which is currently shooting in Los Angeles, also features Julie Benz and Barbara Hershey.
