Black Kids: 'Hurricane Jane'

The new Black Kids single isn't, as you might first imagine, about a typhoon or a cyclone. It actually focuses on the plight of singer Reggie Youngblood, who's had to come alone after a hard night's dancing. Its defiant-but-tragic hook - "It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody / Oh, what's the use of making a bed?" - is sure to become a singalong moment at your local indie disco.

Though it lacks the dayglo pop fizz of their number 11 hit 'I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend', 'Hurricane Jane' makes up for it with oodles of laid-back charm. A combination of Cure-style alt-rock and sugary, sun-drenched melodies, this winning concoction is a tasty appetiser for Black Kids' upcoming debut album.
