It's crunch time for Sam Sparro. His debut single, 'Black and Gold', is one of the best and biggest hits of the year, recently notching up its 14th week in the top 20. But there doesn't seem to be much buzz on single number two, '21st Century Life', due out in a fortnight. We don't really want to ask this question, but is Sparro poised to join the growing number of young, talented artists (Adele, Estelle, Taio Cruz) who weren't able to follow their breakthrough hit with a second consecutive smash?

Well, if confidence alone were enough to conquer the charts, Sparro would be strutting all the way to No.1. We caught his set at the O2 Wireless Festival on Saturday, a performance for which the word "flashy" might have been invented. He came onstage wearing a giant multicoloured kagoul thing that looked a bit like a beach towel, flanked by a trio of backing singers wearing T-shirts that spelled out his name (S-A-M), and proceeded to shimmy like a West End wannabe. How many guys can pull off an entrance like that?

Opening with an energetic rendition of '21st Century Life', Sparro sounded fantastic, and he gave good attitude during 'Hot Mess', a song that sounded a bit like Prince covering an early 90s house tune. Sadly, things took a nosedive after that, as Sparro played a couple of funky but not terribly memorable cuts from his debut album. His lyrics could be a little trite too: nobody wants to be told "it's a sick sick world" by a man wearing an outfit Timmy Mallett would reject as garish.

Thankfully, Sparro pulled it together for the climax, launching into a delirious medley of 'Ride On Time' and 'Gypsy Woman', and following it with the sing-along rendition of 'Black and Gold' that everyone wanted. At the moment Sparro's music isn't quite the equal of his voice and popstar charisma, but that isn't enough to sink his entertaining live show.
