Hello Ana! How's the touring going?
"It's great. We're not going crazy yet, it's probably going to start being crazy in a week or so, but we're having fun. Yeah!"
Are people responding well to the new album?
"It's been pretty good. No one was pressuring us to have this album ready, but we wanted to have new material to play again. It's been pretty cool to come back and play the new stuff, but sometimes we deliberately forget and play our old songs. People don't want to hear only new material, so we never do that."
You lost a band member and a manager in 2007. How much are those difficulties reflected in the new LP?
"It definitely had an impact because the album was written during that period. At the same time, all the problems we had made us come together and deal with a lot of s**t we had to deal with. I guess the album can be seen as a positive thing that came out of the situation. Some of the lyrics definitely stem from that time, but not in a negative way. It's still a very nice album to dance to."
When you were having trouble with your old manager, did you ever consider calling it a day?
"We could have split up at that time or we could have pulled ourselves together and made everything alright. Basically, we pulled more together... And in six months time we overcame everything."
The new album sounds less chaotic and more polished than your debut. Was that intentional?
"Oh yeah! We had a lot more money to do this album. The first one was recorded in a backyard. It was very homemade, which was very cool, but this time we wanted to take it one step further than that. We had a really good studio and sent it to (renowned mixer) Mark Stent to mix. I think the biggest polish on the album comes from Mark Stent. That was intentional."
You've earned a reputation on the live circuit as a party band. Will you be as wild on your new tour?
"It's very hard for us to go on stage and look bored. This is our job and that is how we like to do it. We're not acting or anything, it's natural for us. It's cool that people view us as a party band, because people come expecting to have fun, jump and scream."
There's a song on your album called 'Jager Yoga'. What's that about?
"Jager Yoga? It's about doing yoga with the alcoholic drink Jagermeister, ha ha ha!"
Is that something you do a lot?
"When we toured America in 2006, we didn't have a crew so we had to set up our stage and sound-check ourselves. We didn't have time to warm up before the shows, so we needed something to get us drunk very fast. We heard Jager was the best thing to drink because you do a shot and you're instantly drunk. During that time we were all getting through a bottle of Jager each day. At the time we always went on stage drunk, but nowadays we tend to be a bit more sober!"
Lovefoxxx, the band's singer, is known for her extravagant outfits. Do you ever think, 'God she looks awful in that?'
"Because she doesn't play an instrument, she really likes to have clothes to play with. I think that's so cool and smart. I love all the outfits and makeup. Being on stage for CSS is very natural and something fun. I don't see ourselves ever playing a slow song in a show. I don't know how we would pull that off. Our songs are always dancey or have a beat you can go with. Lovefoxxx dressing in her catsuits and her energy fits in with that party mood."
What's your relationship with Lovefoxxx like off stage?
"We have a chemistry thing. We're like weird twins. If we look at each other we know what we mean. It's really nice. It's the best part of the day when the twins go on stage together."
CSS release their new album, Donkey, on July 21. The single, 'Left Behind', is out now.
