
British Sea Power, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Elbow and Laura Marling were also among the 12 acts shortlisted for album of the year.
Alex Turner, who made the 2006 and 2007 shortlists with Arctic Monkeys, scored his third year in a row with his Last Shadow Puppets side-project.
The list, which was announced by Lauren Laverne at Covent Garden's The Hospital, also featured surprise nominations for electro-rock project Neon Neon, London jazz group Portico Quartet and folk outfit Rachel Unthank & The Winterset.
Chair of Judges Simon Frith said: "This turns out to be a remarkably rich year for British music.
"What is most striking is the continued resilience and flexibility of the album as a way of organising music-making. It remains an unrivalled source of musical invention and imagination."
