Alphabeat

They made us smile with 'Fantastic 6', we leaped around the room with delight after hearing 'Fascination', and we're still swooning at '10,000 Nights'. Now Danish pop treasures Alphabeat are back with 'Boyfriend', a single so full of joy and energy it could coax a smile out of grumpy old Gordon Brown! We called frontman Anders SG – one of three Anders in Alphabeat - to find out how the band's getting along.

What's the new single, 'Boyfriend', about?
"There are not many people who understand the story, but I'm going to tell you anyway. It's actually inspired by a Swedish film about two lesbians. They're teenagers and it's a story about them discovering love and how they feel about other girls. In school they get teased by the other kids and then they decide, 'F**k everyone, we're going to do this. We don't care what you think'. That's what the song's about - not caring what other people think about your boyfriend or girlfriend."

It's also a great song to dance to!
"It is! We made our album in Denmark in 2007, but we re-recorded it before we released it in the UK. 'Boyfriend' was the one song we really wanted to alter because we didn't like the production [on the original]. We worked on it and now it sounds a lot more how we imagined it. It's possibly our favourite track on the album now."

You've been promoting the album around Europe for a long while now. Are you eager to get back in the studio?
"Anders, our songwriter, never stops writing. He doesn't stop just because we're on tour. We do have a great amount of songs and we've been recording some demos in our living room. We don't want to go in a studio and stay there for months and have to come up with something. It's a lot better for us to work on the songs all the time and keep making small changes to them. We probably won't start recording properly for half a year yet, but in that time we can get started and have a good impression of what we want the album to sound like."

Is the new material sounding any different to your current stuff?
"I'm sure you listen to lots of different stuff every month and things change in your mind about what you like. When you're in a band it's the same. Some of our oldest songs are three or four years old, so they're completely different to what we're coming up with now. We have a good picture of what we want to achieve with the next album, but while we're doing the demos everything can still change. It's pretty mixed-up. We do know, but we don't really know!"

Kelly Rowland is apparently a big Alphabeat fan. Would you like to work with her?
"We have heard that and we were flattered. She heard us sound-checking at [London gig venue] KOKO and then she told an interviewer, 'Oh this band are amazing!' It was really nice to hear that, especially as she's pretty big in America. We would only collaborate with an artist if we had the right idea though, so we'd love to do it if the idea was right."

Are Alphabeat always as happy as they seem?
"People always tell us, 'Oh you're so happy'. But we're like, 'No we're not!' I can understand why people think that because we look happy in the 'Fascination' video and we make music that helps people dance. But we're just normal people. We get tired of each other sometimes and it all works because we've known each other for such a long time and we know when to give each other space. However, we definitely don't walk around every day smiling!"

Have you started making any backstage demands yet?
"Actually we don't do that. We're not divas. We're not the sort of people to say, 'Oh please give us only blue M&Ms,' because we're just a normal band. The only thing really is that our keyboard player asks for a bottle of scotch."

Girls Aloud apparently request cheeseburgers and chip butties.
"Haha! If 'Boyfriend' charts really high then maybe we'll start demanding blue M&Ms."

Alphabeat release new single 'Boyfriend' on August 25. Their album, This Is Alphabeat, is out now.
