A document which hints at Eleanor Rigby's true identity has fetched £115,000 for charity, reports say.

The 97-year-old hospital log containing the scrawl of scullery maid E. Rigby was sent to the Sunbeams Music Trust when it approached Sir Paul McCartney for a donation.

A close inspection of the enigmatic gift soon led some to believe that The Beatles's Eleanor Rigby was a real person, rather than the fictional spinster Sir Paul had previously claimed as being the subject of their much-loved hit.

The 1911 salary register from Liverpool City Hospital was auctioned at the Fame Bureau of London's Idea Generation Gallery.
