Rock City is a venue where bands as diverse as Towers Of London and Amy Winehouse play, where Capdown and Fightstar can sell out the main stage, but tiny bands can commandeer the smaller areas for their burgeoning fanbase. Thus, it's got a room to suit every band's audience size, and Cute, despite being in one of the smaller rooms - indeed, the basement - don't seem to be doing too badly for themselves. The gig was sold out, and a packed out crowd swelled and surged as support band after support band passed, until, finally, excitable and animated frontman Shaant energised the crowd as he jumped from spot to spot to emphasise the thrill of the evening, frequently just about avoiding a collision with new guitarist Jack.
Strong support from As Tall As Lions and Envy On The Coast helped charge the atmosphere at the gig, and indeed they themselves appeared to have a rather large number of fans who knew the songs and the words - not a small task for a US band who were hanging onto the coattails of the emerging Cute. The overwhelmingly teenage crowd yelped in excitement as the band appeared, and proceeded to sing along, for the most part word-perfect, to practically every song Cute played.
Indeed, this led Shaant into slight laziness, as the delight of hearing your own songs sung back at you never seemed to pall for him, and his vocal moments shrunk more and more as the concert went on, merely preferring to allow the diligent fans to enjoy the closeness of the venue, where the band were even touchable, something they won't be able to do again if they grow bigger - something along the line of bands like Panic! At The Disco and their current level of success.
Good gig, but not spectacular.
