Did anyone catch that Gareth Gates documentary over Christmas? The Bradford lad emerged as a thoroughly decent, occasionally misguided ("I want to dress like Russell Brand!") young man who had been chewed up, drained of flavour and spat out by the Pop Idol phenomenon. Yes, that's how long it's been since Gareth Gates was a star: he came from a world before The X Factor.

But now, after four years in the pop wilderness, he's back. 'Changes' is a stately ballad, reminiscent of Radiohead's 'No Surprises' thanks to its ringing xylophone riff, which shows off Gates' yearning, impassioned vocals. Clearly, Gareth Gates has grown up with more dignity than anyone beckoned towards manhood by Jordan deserves. And, yes, he's taken to wearing waistcoats and fertility-threatening jeans, but there's no evidence of backcombing. Yet.
