Glastonbury Festival organiser Michael Eavis has been given a CBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.

The 71-year-old, who is gearing up for the event later this week, was recognised for his services to music.

Eavis, who held the first of the festivals at Worthy Farm, Somerset, in 1970, said he owed his success to people who had helped him over the years.

He commented: "I'm so pleased not only for myself but for the hundreds and perhaps thousands of people who have had faith in me and supported my ideas through thick and thin."

The event has transformed from an informal gathering of 1,500 revellers to a highly organised festival attracting 175,000.
