Their debut double A-side single 'Black Cat'/'Blanco' should see them move from the depths of obscurity to at least being recognised down your local indie disco. 'Blanco' in particular should get even the hippest kids splitting their best skinny jeans in two as they try and jive to its cheeky rhythm. Reminiscent of the underrated '60s girl-group imitators The Pipettes, its finger clicking beat and extra-jangly guitar line underpins some sweet vocal harmonies.
What 'Black Cat' lacks in the groove and toe-tappingness of 'Blanco', it makes up with a sinister, tumbling backing track. With the best (and maybe only) use of double bass in a pop song that DS has ever heard, the tune wobbles like a huge dollop of jelly, while the girls whisper threats about crossing a mysterious black cat's path. It's a tune that wouldn't sound amiss soundtracking a murder mystery weekend, perhaps winning even Hercule Poirot's discerning approval on the dancefloor.
Hopefully, this won't be the last we hear of this intriguing female duo, who are stretching the concept of retro music beyond the tired and well-worn '80s sound.
