Jay Sean: 'Ride It'

Jay Sean isn't like most R&B stars. He went to a boys-only private school, studied medicine for two years at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and, more pertinently, nabbed himself two top ten hits in 2004 without a flutter of publicity or Kanye/Fiddy-esque macho posturing. Moulding his Asian roots around commercial R&B and old-school hip-hop sounds proved fruitful on his debut record Me Against Myself, and, if 'Ride It' is anything to go by, he's following the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy for album number two.

Based around the sort of groove R Kelly used to knock out by the half-dozen back when he wasn't spending every other day on the phone to his lawyers, this won't be everyone's cup of tea. His cringe-inducing calls to "turn the lights down low" are about as alluring as an offer to spend an evening tucked up with Judy Finnigan, and the sleek, smooth production does nothing to perk up its rather bland beats. That said, it's got a catchy chorus, its cheeky, finger-clicking break-down should find itself onto the next Beyoncé album, and, best of all, it's better than Soulja Boy. For that, we can all be grateful.
