Former Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley has revealed that he has terminal cancer.

The 59-year-old announced last month that he had postponed two shows in March to undergo surgery for a tumour in his esophagus.

He has now told friends that he has only a short time to live after he was diagnosed with cancer.

He told the Express & Star: "It happens. But I have had a fantastic life and been very lucky.

"I have seen some great bands and played with many great musicians, and have enjoyed some tremendous experiences.

"I am thankful that I can say a proper goodbye to all the friends I have made, who are now rallying round me and my family."

His 60th birthday celebrations on March 8 will now be held next week. He had been expected to start performing with a new band next month.

Galley also appeared with hard rock bands Finders Keepers, Phenomena and Trapeze.
