Speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, Young said: "I think that the time when music could change the world is past. I think it would be very naive to think that in this day and age."
The 'Heart of Gold' singer believes the world has changed too much for music to make a difference.
"I think the world today is a different place, and that it's time for science and physics and spirituality to make a difference in this world and to try to save the planet.
"If we didn't do that, it would just feel like a bunch of old hippies up there saying what they thought - and who cares?" he said.
Young's film CSNY Deja Vu, which he directed under the alias Bernard Shakey, is screening out of competition at the festival.
