Moby: 'Alice'

Sixteen years after 'Go', Moby's showing no sign of resting on his laurels. 'Alice', the first single from his upcoming Last Night album, finds the world's favourite vegan knob-twiddler, a man who's already stretched his artistic range to include rock, electro, blues and disco, adding a new genre to his oeuvre: hip-hop.

As dark and brooding as an Italian film star, this is hip-hop at its most uncompromising: ominous synths, scrawling guitar riffs and a distortion-heavy bassline that cakes Moby's beats in a thick, heavy fug. The vocals, provided by London MC Aynzli and Nigerian hip-hop group 419 Squad, are equally intense, making 'Alice' a pretty unsettling listening experience. An impressive experiment for sure, but it won't be usurping 'Porcelain' or 'Natural Blues' on Moby's festival sets this summer.
