Pete Doherty is writing a musical with ex-Libertines bandmate Carl Barat.
The Donmar Warehouse in London's Covent Garden has asked the pair to pen a stage show to open early next year.
The singers were close friends until Doherty was kicked out of the band when his drug use spiralled out of control in 2004.
But they reunited for a one-off gig last April and Barat confirmed that they are now working on a musical.
A Donmar spokesperson said its director Douglas Hodge was in talks about the project, but it was "very much in the early stages of development, with no deadlines attached".
It is believed it will centre on the struggles of an up-and-coming rock 'n' roll band.
Barat, who now fronts Dirty Pretty Things, recently told the Sunday Mirror that he had been approached by the Donmar, adding: "The theatre wants lots of new songs. We'll probably have to write about 20."
