Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland has pleaded innocent to driving under the influence of drugs.

The 40-year-old frontman was absent from court and entered his plea through a defence attorney.

Weiland was arrested last year in California after crashing his car. Police noted he showed "signs of impairment" and reportedly refused to take a blood or urine test.

After the arrest, Weiland was freed on $40,000 bail. He is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on April 4.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said the singer could face a maximum of one year in jail due to a previous conviction for driving under the influence.
