The Hoosiers: 'Cops and Robbers'

Though their slight whiff of wackiness isn't to everyone's taste – frontman Irwin Sparkes is constantly threatening to break into the most painful of comic gurns - it's hard to take against The Hoosiers. They've got energy to burn, know their way round a decent tune and, crucially, seem to get a real kick out of being popstars. If only the rest of the class of '08 felt the same.

The truth be told (the truth be told...) 'Cops & Robbers' isn't their finest moment, being rather too indebted to The Cure's 'Love Cats' to be taken seriously. Its lack of originality notwithstanding, there's plenty to enjoy here, not least the riotous orgy of brass that invades towards the climax and very nearly collapses the entire song. Best of all, it's always fun working out whether Sparkes was actually dancing on hot coals while laying down his trademark hiccupy vocals.
