As you've no doubt heard, Scarlett Johansson is the latest Hollywood A-lister to play rockstar. She's actually recorded an album of Tom Waits covers, so the words "danceable", "radio-friendly" and "a barrel of laughs" are unlikely to spring to mind while listening to it.

Lead single 'Falling Down', featuring backing vocals from David Bowie, is a surprisingly subdued debut: lo-fi and ruminative, but with a real sense of drama towards the end. Scarlett's voice lacks finesse, but it's tougher, huskier and generally less flimsy than we might have expected.

The video is presumably intended to look chic and arty in, y'know, a lo-tech kinda way, but actually it just feels a bit cheap. That said, it's worth watching to the finish to see Salman Rushdie plant a few smackers on Scarlett's neck. Well, who can blame him?
