The Subways: 'Alright'

It's been a pretty tough year for Subways frontman Billy Lunn. While recording the follow-up to the band's highly-regarded debut, Young for Eternity, he was forced to undergo an operation for nodules on his vocal cords. Then he split from long-term lover Charlotte Cooper - who, by the way, also happens to be the bassist in the band.

Bearing all this in mind, it's fairly incredible that this single is such a gloriously anthemic summer smash. The lyrics hint at a slighty murky underbelly, but musically-speaking 'Alright' is a soaring, sun-drenched gem, with Cooper's dainty, angelic tones balancing out Lunn's gruff holler brilliantly. Cooper and Lunn's personal relationship may have deteriorated since their last album, but The Subways have never sounded stronger.
