But Summer seems keen to position herself as a relevant, contemporary artist again, hiring producers who've crafted recent hits for Kylie, Shakira and Leona Lewis to ensure her comeback album sounds fresh and modern. Crayons is the work of an artist hungry for hits, but also one who's lacking in confidence, a trait that manifests itself in Summer's slightly desperate bid to cover all the bases. She flits restlessly here between hard-edged dance-pop, identikit R&B, pizza restaurant Latin, schlocky but melodic ballads, summery reggae-pop and slightly dated seven-minute house workouts.
This relentless genre-hopping would make sense from a teenage pop starlet looking to find her niche in the chart landscape, but it's less becoming from a 59-year-old woman who can legitimately call herself a legend. Why would the disco queen who gave us 'I Feel Love' and 'Bad Girls' choose to sound like Rihanna, as she does on the title track, or Tina Turner, whom she channels on 'Slide Over Backwards'? Several other tracks are strangely anonymous, with Summer's no-longer-youthful voice offering the only clue that we're listening to somebody who's made a fair bit of music in her time.
A handful of tracks offer the sense of occasion that her comeback deserves, particularly the bombastic 'Stamp Your Feet', with its smart playground chant hooks, and the electro-tinged 'Science Of Love', which has a memorable chorus. 'The Queen Is Back', meanwhile, shows some of the personality that's lacking elsewhere, as Summer name-checks 'On The Radio' and 'Love To Love You' while fantasising about a triumphant return to the music scene.
But only the surging disco-rock of 'Fame (The Game)' really adds to Summer's legacy. A lacerating send-up of the "hair extensions, botox and faux-forced interventions" of modern celebrity, it's the one track on Crayons that sounds like something only Donna Summer could do; not coincidentally, it's also the one time that this comeback album feels truly vital.

Well I tend to find Nick's reviews fair, unbiased and on the whole very good. I do however feel that Nick may have missed the point a little here. I feel that Donna is trying to re-find her nische in the ever changing world of music. Though she did make that catastrofic mistake of commenting, shall we say negatively, about homosexuals (about 90% of her fanbase) all those years back, there are more than enough anthemic moments on Crayons to allow us to forgive her this faux pas.

A review like this is just too smug and carries no evidence to back it up. The Author has not only missed a rather blatant point that an artist at the top of her game is showing all of her pretenders that she can still do it, only better, but THE one thing Donna Summer is revered for is her versatilty. Her ability to change her voice to suit her many different styles is matched by nobody. Her voice is not only warmer now it's a lot richer and she's showing off to the full on Crayons. Not only has she co-produced the songs on the album she is singing the hell out of them... And why...? Because she can. Please don't tell me that you expected a woman with possibly THE most achingly distinctive vocal chords in her field to creep back in quietly? You really are in the wrong job Nick Levine.

Crayons is a must have. Donna puts her heart and soul in this one and the voice is still one of kind. 17 years is a long time to wait but this is definitely worth the wait. Donna brings us from 1975 to 2008 and it is all good! Run to get this one

Not sure what critcs or some fans expected to hear after a 17 year hiatus, but Crayons is wonderful. It's everything Donna Summer has always been: versatile.

I just hope this review doesn't prevent anybody from buying this album, which is simply amazing. Every track is like a different colour, a different musical genre: only the great Donna Summer could do it... Her voice is as powerful and flexible as ever; her new songs are pure joy for the ears. All you have to do is listen without prejudice.

I totally disagree with this music critic. This Album is Outstanding!!!! I have heard it every day since I bought it 3 weeks ago and I can't get enough of it. Every track is so different that you can't get bored and her voice sounds great after all these years. I highly recommend this album

I've listened to this album a lot over the last few weeks. It's a good effort but I agree not the masterpiece one would expect after 17 years. I do love "Stamp Your Feet" though.

As a long time fan of Donna Summer, I am very excited about her new release, not only because of the long wait but also because Donna is showcasing her talent by covering different music genres in this album. Even though I agree that the production tends to stay in a 'safe' zone, she does color outside the line with the variety in this album. Those of us who know Donna are aware that this is what she wants, to explore different genres and she has the voice to do it, with each song sounding almost as if it were a different singer. The musical variety, however, is a double edged sword, while showcasing Donna's talent it also seems to take some folks (like the author of this review) by surprise. Donna has evolved as an artist and is showing something different to her classic albums where a symphonic like disco melody weaves the whole work together (Once Upon a Time, Four Seasons of Love). While many fans would have loved such a work, it is also truly rewarding to see her energy explode in songs such as Stamp your Feet and Mr. Music. Go Donna!

I give this album 5 stars because it's really brillerent. It's fantastic to hear Donna's voice again and it's truly wonderful to listen. My favourite songs are stamp your feet and Mr. Music. I HOPE that she makes a comeback by going back to the UK Charts in the Top 10. ROOT FOR DONNA :)

I make ceramic representations of popular tourist destinations in the south east. I have to say my young (not so young actually he's 48!!) son put this record on as he was dressing to go out with his air steward friend Andy and it certainly got my toes a tapping. I wish he'd bring one of his young ladies home for tea sometimes, I'm sure they'd love Madonna Summer. It reminded me of Bucks Fizz in parts. Lovely.
