Basshunter: 'Now You're Gone'
The continuing success of Jonas Altberg is without question the most bizarre story the pop world has thrown up in 2008. Altberg, who began making music on the computer programme Fruity Loops nearly a decade ago, has outsold nearly every Winehouse-wannabe soul siren and skinny-jeaned indie band by a whopping great margin this year. With only Eurodance-loving Clubland TV helping to promote his records, that's quite an achievement for the 22-year-old Swede.

Basshunter racked up over 400,000 sales of his debut single, 'Now You're Gone', earlier this year and his follow-up, 'All I Ever Wanted', is heading for similarly impressive figures. Altberg produces mass consumption hits that appeal to a generation more used to downloading ringtones than flicking through the Woolies' singles charts for their pop fix. He takes the Stock Aitken Waterman hit factory production process to new lows, literally knocking out sound-a-like "choons" from his home computer.

In interviews Altberg comes across as a fascinating character. A Tourettes sufferer who has minor obsessions with geek culture and his own genitalia, he provides more interesting chatter in five minutes than any number of hours locked away with a Pigeon Detective or a Guillemot. Sadly, Altberg's warmth and sense of humour is a world away from the cold calculation of this robotic debut LP.

With 16 tracks in total, most listeners will require a packet of Ibuprofen and plenty of resilience to see them through to the finish. Each track follows a rigid formula, with surging synths, throbbing basslines and corny, power ballad-style choruses that arrive exactly when you expect them to. Altberg understands the basics of Eurodance and wallops us around the head with them until we surrender.

Take for instance the generic shout-outs of "Ready for take off!" and "Are you ready!" from album opener 'Now You're Gone', which are used to herald the inevitable pummeling crescendo of bleeps and beats. Altberg uses the same trick on 'All I Ever Wanted' with the cries "Drop the bass!" and "Are you ready?" Obviously running dry on ideas by track three, he tries "B-B-Bass!" and "Are you ready?" on 'Please Don't Go', a horrifying KC and the Sunshine Band cover. You won't be surprised to hear that Altberg recycles these phrases ad infinitum throughout the rest of the record.

But, on an album jam-packed with musical atrocities, there are a few moments which stand out for their sheer comic awfulness. Altberg's occasional attempts at romance are particularly laughable. "You can make the seeds infertile, but you know you can never make me love you more," he sings on 'Love You More', inviting jaws across the nation to drop to the floor. Meanwhile, the addition of two Swedish-language originals and pair of bonus remixes is surely overkill for even the most die-hard clubber.

What Basshunter intended to achieve with this record is unclear. If he merely wishes to cash in on a musical craze that appeals to kids sloshed on Red Bull and ringtone creators, he's done his job well. However, if he has any desire to be seen as an artist who cares about his music, he's totally abolished that dream with this hellish musical cocktail.

This album is awesome. Today eletromusic has awful songs like "We no speak Americano" and "Like a g6", "All I Ever Wanted" is ten thousand times better then these "musics"!

Basshunter is an embarrassment to humanity and the drivel on this album makes Stock Aitken and Waterman/Simon Cowell look like Bob Dylan. What have sales got to do with quality? The UK has 500,000 heroin addicts and no-one's saying that's any good.

I actually happen to like this album. It's very different then most artists in the U.S. and the songs are catchy. I've listened to it more times than I can count and I think whoever wrote this review is absolutely insane. Just because Basshunter is different than most artists out there doesn't mean you have to be cruel. I love all of Basshunter's songs and can't wait for Bass Generation on October 5th!

This is not a great album, but is only really worthy of 3 stars, about 9 of the 16 songs are worth a listen, about another 5 are bearable, but there are a couple of complete horrors. Best song - Angel in the Night

Jonas Altberg has proved he's a dance genius...creating a CD that's catchy, fun, and great to dance to! The CD's been (and still is) a chart-topping success, so anyone saying it's bad? I'm afraid you're wrong! :)

It is not techno but it is definitely dance music. You can call it Euro trash but I absolutely love it personally. The lyrics may not be as refined as other performers but please tell me what dance music is poetic and making sence 100% of the time.

can this guy actually come up with anything that is his music instead of stealing other peoples songs.. is speeding up the song classed as remixing..if so i`ll remix every song i actually own...sure anyone can use fruityloops ...even a 10 yr old retarded kid can do what A**Hunter does...get any some and put in a program like virtual dj and increase the tempo/pitch while keeping voice pitch as normal...the bloke is a complete and utter b***end and the music word is worse off by his retarded attempts at "remixing" ...one recommendation.."basshunter...go die in a fire you talentless b*lls**k!!"

This was one of the best and most entertaining reviews I have ever read. I am an avid fan of dance music, but this album is exactly what it says here. I don't know how Jonas can have any respect for himself as a musician after producing what is essentially one song, with chord (well, bass) progressions slightly changed. The same goes for the melodies, which only have one saving grace, they aren't as bad as Basshunter's video clips. By the next single, it will just be a 4 minute shot of breasts - sorry, it will be 5 seconds of Jonas' face, where he screams "Are you ready?", followed by 3 minutes and 56 seconds of breasts. Excellent (and accurate) review, horrible album.

I absolutely love this album... i can't believe that there are so many people that don't like it... but then again music tastes do vary. The songs on this album, yeah most do sound the same, but thats likes saying most albums have the same type of music on them. Best track on the album is "I Miss You".

I listened to it, and at first it didn't seem that good to me. Then I listened to it a second time and realized that once you get past the phrases it's actually quite good. Or, at least I found it so. But to all you people saying this album is s**t. Most of you are from the UK, where this album topped the charts. So by saying everyone who listens to this is a chav. You are, in extension, calling your people chavs too. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how godawful or biased it is.

who the hell is this person to comment about this kind of music? ok maybe you're some rock n roll or cowboy yank or whatever you should be, but that doesn't make you talk s*** about euro music. you won't be surprised by how ridiculous country music sounds in europe. so keep smoking dude.

The person who wrote this review just doesn't seem to like dance that well. The album is actually quite good, epecially considering 400,000+ copies were sold of a single. The song "I Can Walk on Water" is a great example of a great dance song, for one. If someone who wasn't seemingly biased against against this genre wrote this review, it wouldn't get such an inaccurate review. A 1/5 album wouldn't top the British charts a #1. *I* would give the album at least a 3.8.

Well I quite like some dance music but his is absolutely atrocious and so have to completely agree with the reviewer. Also, the people who call anyone "dumb" should get their own facts straight. If you read the review correctly you will see that "Please Don't Go" is the KC and the Sunshine Band cover not "Love You More". How embarrasing for you...
