Anastacia: 'Heavy Rotation'
The cover of Anastacia's fourth album shows the blonde belter draped across a bed with her stomach and plenty of cleavage on show. If this teasing pose came from Britney or Christina it wouldn't raise an eyebrow, but from the 40-year-old diva it feels slightly awkward. Sadly, this desire to seem youthful and contemporary is a key theme on Heavy Rotation, a record that often plays like a midlife crisis in musical form.

The crack team of producers includes Ne-Yo, Rodney Jerkins and Robbie Williams's old buddy Guy Chambers, and the concept is simple enough: make Anastacia relevant to the generation brought up on Amy Winehouse and Pussycat Dolls rather than Mariah and Whitney. The low-key disco of lead single 'I Can Feel You' is a decent indication of Anastacia's intentions here.

Unfortunately, she consistently fails to tame her foghorn vocals, smothering these tracks with a series of call-to-arms platitudes. The sixties girl group pop of 'The Way I See It' and soulful funk of 'Absolutely Positively' have 'Sound of 2008' stamped all over them, while the title track recalls recent Britney singles, but Anastacia too often overpowers the music. With her vocals stuck somewhere between a dirty old woman's cackle and a throat-bursting holler, understatement is conspicuous in its absence.

Lyrically, she never falters from her favourite subject of "standing up strong", even attempting to update 'I Will Survive' for the noughties on 'Defeated'. "You can say that you won but I'll never believe it," she roars. "I can't be defeated!" The cliche-ridden 'Same Song', where she tells us to throw our hands "in the air" and live "without a care", is just as uninspiring, pushing the star dangerously close to self-parody.

Whether those who bought Anastacia's first three albums will be charmed by her fourth remains to be seen, but the camp bombast of 'Never Gonna Love Again' and sunny pleasantries of 'In Summer' should make decent radio fodder. For everyone else, however, Heavy Rotation will be too cringe-inducing to bear the repeated listens that its title promises.

Oh btw! Midlife crisis!! 40 isn't midlife, she doesn't look awkward on the album cover! She looks gorgeous! For 40 she looks fantastic! She looks radiant and in the trend! Better than f**king Madonna. She's not on drugs like most of these "musicians". Pfft!

You know what? Yeah I was disappointed with this album at first, but I've got used to it, its nothing compared to her 3rd FANTASTIC album or the 4 releases on her greatest hits album but it still is a pretty good album. She herself describes it as a mature version of her albums "Not That Kind" and "Freak of Nature", bad choice in my eyes but hey! I don't mind! She's back looking better than ever. I do like the album, infact I love it (just not as much as the self titled album) especially, I can feel you, That's just The Way, Absolutley Positively, Defeated, Heavy Rotation, I Call it Love, Never Gonna Love Again and Beautiful Messed up World...so yeah I like a fair bunch of the songs lol! I think she's back and the next album (please end of 2009/beggining of 2010) will be fab!! Love you Anastacia, welcome back diva b**ch!! ^_^

This album's alright. I was a tad dissappointed by the lead singel but other songs make up for it. It sounds very similar to her first to albums with the only song bearing any resemblence to her 3rd is Defeated. It's a grower.

It seems everyone is telling this Alex Fletcher guy, whoever he is,to shut the 'Freak' up!That review was as weak as a Steps dance routine. He's just slated the biggest voice in pop, Anastacia, and her most mature,club-friendly album to date.Firstly, why should this singing sensation "tame" her voice? She's proved her talent of adapting her massive range, and personailty,to pop, soul, rock, jazz & dance... & comparing her vocals to Britney is even more incriminating.Unlike Britter's latest efforts,Ana stays well clear of the whispery autotune & despite moving in to 2008's pop/dance genre, she still manages to stamp her strademark sounds all over it & maintains credibility. As for the album cover?Anastacia has never looked more womanly,or damn sexy, ever!Mr.Fletcher, you obviously have little taste in music...or girls...but me?I'm keeping Anastacia on 'Heavy Rotation'!

Alex Fletcher has no clue when he hears excellent music. Anastacia's new album is creative and explossive. Her voice has never sounded better. I predict that she will do very well when it drops next year in America.

EXCUSE ME, when anastacia was doing rnb all of u were listening thunders............ now you like DUFFY or Amy winehouse, but u can't understand that she was the first doing that style... As far as you Stev from york is concerned, certainly you don't know to recognise a great voice among the sh*t that floating on air everywhere around us....... So please stop these foolish reviews and keep your eyes wide open on good and unique voice and music. Thank you!

I disagree with the reviewer regarding his ageism (memo to all journalists - we're ALL getting tired of it), but unfortunately the album itself is p**s poor. It plays like a cynical attempt to finally shift some cds for Anastacia in America, and plays to the worst corporate bland radio sensibilities on offer in the US. The synthesizers and drum machines are cheesy and the lyrics cliched. Not Anastacia's finest moment by any means.

I just got the new Anastacia album and it is excellent. I have no idea what the reviewer was listening to but it couldn't have been this album. There are some great tracks on the album, Heavy Rotation is great as is Same Song. There are no bad songs on the entire CD. I would urge people to ignore this bad review and form their own opinion. The reviewer is obviously not a fan of Anastacia. Trust me folks, buy the CD or download it, you won't be disappointed.

Well, this review is just rubbish!! Her pose doesn't look awkward at all, your just being ageist!! How can you assume she is trying to sound youthful!! She doesn't need to try to sound contemporary as she just does!! Also, I'm pretty sure that its not a sound tack to a midlife crisis. Your review is quite offensive actually!! The tracks that have been leaked are brilliant, her voice sounds better than ever, she has stuck to her roots and what she is good at, she sings with passion and feeling. She means what she sings as well as writing it herself. Her fans will love this, and there are a lot of them out there, she has sold more than 3million records in the UK alone!! This record will do really well as it will appear to all her older fans and bag her some new ones too!!

I cannot believe somebody would be so critical of an amazing songstress who is seen in the same category as Auretha Franklin. An amazing voice matches an amazing woman. And as for her album cover it just goes to show that 40 ain't the end of the world and you only grow riper with age. To the reviewer....YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE....AND SOME TASTE IN MUSIC!!! Ananstacia is a round to stay!!!!

Since when reviews are SO subjective? Come on, this woman is queen of the industry, you cannot be so harsh to her. The album is great, she sounds GREEEAT, and are more than 7 songs that are worth the wait. So, re.listen to it :) Maybe you heard Beyonce's album
